RNA Barracks in the Khumbu
The political leaders of Nepal have placed high priority in protecting the eastern Solukhumbu region from encroachment by the Maoist insurgent forces. These guerrilla soldiers have moved into most other districts to extort and intimidate the villagers. Tourism accounts for a very significant portion of the country's economy, and the mountain trail leading to the base of Mt. Everest is among the most heavily toured routes for foreign trekkers. The King of Nepal is well aware that an incursion by the Maoists in that area would disrupt a great deal of the confidence and commerce from the trekkers. He has clearly decided to place a strong military presence within Khumbu region, with several heavily fortified army posts at key points among the villages.
The Lukla airport is perhaps the most important point to secure since it is
the entrance to the Khumbu. The airport is set on all sides with improvised
fortifications and alarms. There is razor wire spread around the facility and
it is lined with bunkers. Further up the river valley in the trekking hub and
regional market of Namche there is a large army barracks that is also well
fortified against any intrusions. The military presence is very visible there
too. You will often see soldier in uniform patrolling the perimeters of their
facilities, but also walking through the center of villages, with loaded semi-automatic
rifles slung at their backs. They also guard occasional security checkpoints,
and as tourists pass by there is a little tension in the air as both sides
are not sure what to expect from each other. As with anyone carrying a loaded
gun it's best not to make any sudden movements. This all gives a strange flavor
to the experience of the serene mountain views, but it is a show of force that
the King will not let that region fall to disarray.
