OMG OMG
What a day! It’s going to take me several more days to catch up in my mind and even process what we experienced. By the way we are full on in the middle of Dashein, the year’s biggest Hindu festival and it’s the height of the season for the white monkeys for trekking. This city is… well I can’t even say crazy because that word completely misses the concept. All I can say is that it’s a paradigm shift so that I see the world in a different way now. I’ll start with a summary of what we did, then over time I’ll have to devote entire menu selections on the main page. Things started off very peacefully because I woke up early and I enjoyed a walk in the Yak and Yeti garden. Pema met us at the hotel and he brought a driver with him to take us all the the Tribhuvan University Training Hospital. From the moment we stepped through the locked gate of the “emergency room” door and smelled the funk of years of poor sanitation it sank in just how lacking the facility was in resources. Dr. Thuessen, who has been serving on a humanitarian mission there for the past year from the United States, guided us on a tour and described how dire the circumstances were there. Many people come to the hospital seeking treatment, but since there is no space for them, a lot of them can’t be treated. The hospital can’t even afford the basic disposable items for the treatments, so a lot of things are re-used in ways that would sound the alarms in other countries. Staying at that hospital is a hazard in itself due to the poor hygeine conditions. This place is where my immunizations really paid off.
